The Poet’s Lot
Shout, trees and shrubs of Mount Hống, water of the underneath river Rum
A sword of half-a-meter length, under a tattered field banner, once the Unconquered Might of Tiger
Towards the fine young silk – turning, refining – of the language
While, this upkeep, your lot, a buried thin shirt – grass of running lush-green field
– translated by Thường Quán
The Poet’s Lot
Roaring over the trees of Hống and the water of Rum
A three-foot sword was someone’s life in a ragged tiger tent.
To beautify as golden silk the Viet tongue
Someone’s lot is a cloth of grass richly green.
– translated by Lê Ðình Nhất-Lang
