Vertical Evening Meal

The elliptical table is not of the same mind
As the table cloth in shades of amitabha
Naked octopi
Having escaped from the ocean
Now lie on their sides above green vegetables
Shaped like coins.

The owl on the Chivas Regal label
scrutinizes a row of shrimps nestling in terror
under a thin blanket of sauce

Diners are like bees heading back to their hives
In the center is the queen bee
Filled with nectar sucked dry
From poor weedy flowers
Grown on parched soil

Worker bees serve strangely-scented ambrosia from heaven
The queen bee drinks the familiar blessings of earth

A frog tries to jump off the table
But he’s missing his legs
Suddenly he realizes
All around him the vertical evening

Củ sắn không chỉ là củ sắn
Chúng làm chân tay, tâm hồn tôi nhúc nhích
