When she speaks    <br \/>I gather the Vietnamese words I can understand    <br \/>like jewels&#160; \u2013    <br \/>a matchless collection of names and dates and places    <br \/>that I will never know. I watch her mottled hands    <br \/>peel an orange with near-sacrosanct care,    <br \/>setting citrus crescents in radiating petals    <br \/>on washer-warmed plates.<\/p>\n<p>I see centuries in the dent of her skin,   <br \/>a history book written in wrinkles. Her portrait    <br \/>hangs above the dining table,    <br \/>a gently rendered girl in emerald, with sharp eyes    <br \/>and a moonlike face \u2013    <br \/>the same rounded jaw I see    <br \/>when I glance in the mirrored glass    <br \/>of her porcelain cabinet.
