II, are the protesters reasonable, why, and in which cases?

Binh Danh: Not really, FOB 2 did show diverse viewpoints. When people visit an art show, they don’t have to like everything they see. They might find stuffs that they like and dislike. No one is pointing a gun to their head telling them that they must accept everything they see as the truth. I think the protesters were confused between art and propaganda. They think these are the same. There were no civil debates, it was just: take it down, take the whole show down. What interested me was that they didn’t make any comments, to my knowledge, of the gay theme in FOB 2. I guess that was more hush, hush.

Da Màu: Many people use the so-called “artistic merits” (or the lack of artistic merits) of those artworks as the reason for their protest, or to agree with protesting. What do you think of this point of view?

Binh Danh: I don’t think that makes any sense at all. People should have a viewpoint of their likes and dislikes and works they don’t care about, but the curators are the ones putting this show together. What about their merits? This is their show, they should organize it anyway they want. Those opposing factors could have their own show. I don’t see them doing any good for the community at large, other than making banners/propaganda, and making loud noises. We have our own situation up here in Northern California over "Little Saigon" or the "Saigon Vietnamese Business District." The whole hoopla was a waste of time. It cost the city so much money and people were fed up with Vietnamese Americans arguing over such a stupid thing when there was more urgent care to attend to. Well, the result of this outcome: there was no Vietnamese-American elected to service in the last city/county election. Things like this hurt our community politically. No art institution would ever want to focus on a Vietnamese theme show.

Da Màu: What feelings or thoughts do you have when VAALA has to close the exhibit before the scheduled time?

Binh Danh: I was disappointed, but I understand the circumstance.

Da Màu: In your family, are there conflicting ideas regarding the F.O.B II event?

Binh Danh: Not really, and no one was surprised of the closing of the show.
