C\u00f3 m\u1ed9t <span class=\"GramE\">s\u01a1<\/span> xu\u1ea5t nh\u1ecf \u1edf \u0111\u00e2y: thay v\u00ec \u0111\u00e1nh s\u1ed1 trang cho \u0111o\u1ea1n \u0111\u1ea7u (102), ng\u01b0\u1eddi ph\u1ee5 tr\u00e1ch \u0111\u00e3 d\u00f9ng d\u1ea5u ba ch\u1ea5m (&#8230;) \u0111\u1ec3 ph\u00e2n \u0111o\u1ea1n v\u00e0 tin r\u1eb1ng b\u1ea1n \u0111\u1ecdc s\u1ebd nh\u00ecn ra d\u1ee5ng \u00fd c\u1ee7a m\u00ecnh. Poetry can\u2019t be created via bi-national marriages or artificial insemination. There might be first class Vietnamese scientists of the first generation, but it\u2019s doubtful there could be first class Vietnamese poets in the English, French, or German language so soon\u201d <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal\">(Two Rivers, page 102) and<\/b>       <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cVietnamese poets living abroad can act as a bridge between Vietnamese poetry and world poetry. It\u2019s a contribution befitting the circumstance of the time. But whether contemporary Vietnamese poetry can create a new departure is something that will be determined by poets living in the homeland\u201d <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal\">(Two Rivers, page 102 &#8211; 103)<\/b>      <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ph\u1ea7n in \u0111\u1eadm l\u00e0 ph\u1ea7n s\u1ebd \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c b\u1ed5 sung trong m\u1ee5c tr\u00edch d\u1eabn c\u1ee7a c\u00e2u h\u1ecfi ph\u1ecfng v\u1ea5n. Nh\u1eefng thay \u0111\u1ed5i t\u01b0\u01a1ng t\u1ef1 c\u0169ng s\u1ebd \u00e1p d\u1ee5ng trong b\u1ea3n d\u1ecbch ti\u1ebfng Vi\u1ec7t:     <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal\">\u201cV\u1ec1 m\u1ed9t cu\u1ed9c h\u00f4n ph\u1ed1i c\u1ee7a ng\u00f4n ng\u1eef, t\u00f4i kh\u00f4ng th\u1ec3 h\u00ecnh dung \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c m\u1ed9t th\u1ee9 th\u01a1 <span class=\"GramE\">pha<\/span> tr\u1ed9n &#8211; n\u1eeda Vi\u1ec7t n\u1eeda Anh, hay v\u1edbi nh\u1eefng th\u1ee9 ti\u1ebfng kh\u00e1c. Th\u01a1 kh\u00f4ng th\u1ec3 \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c s\u00e1ng t\u1ea1o qua nh\u1eefng h\u00f4n nh\u00e2n hai-qu\u1ed1c-gia hay qua th\u1ee5 tinh nh\u00e2n t\u1ea1o. Will there be a kind of hyphenated poetry-half Vietnamese and half English, half French, half German-or all English or French or German down the road?      <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">ND The Vietnamese who o nuoc ngoai (live abroad)- pardon me, I do not like the term hai ngoai (overseas)- still write poetry, and most of them continue to write it only in Vietnamese. Each language has its own spirit. You can change the words, the phrases, the pronunciations, but you cannot easily change the spirit. So the writers who live abroad continue to write in Vietnamese.      <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As for a marriage of languages, I cannot imagine a hyphenated poetry-half and half English or some other language. Poetry can&#8217;t be created via bi-national marriages or artificial insemination. There might be first-class Vietnamese scientists of the fist generation, but it&#8217;s doubtful there could be first-class Vietnamese poets in the English, French, or German language so soon. There may well be such poets down the road; but it&#8217;ll take some time, at least a generation, for the cultural heritage to be replaced and its spirit reoriented.     <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">NC During the 193os, Vietnamese poetry broke ayay from its millennium-old moorings with the arrival of the New Poetry movement. Then <span class=\"GramE\">came<\/span> the August Revolution in 1945 and the predominant presence of Revolutionary Poetry. Do you see a need now for another breakaway: <span class=\"GramE\">a poetry<\/span> for the contemporary period? Could Vietnamese poets living abroad make contributions to this poetry?      <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">ND The &quot;new\u201d in poetry isn&#8217;t the same as the &quot;new&quot; in fashion or fad.When it&#8217;s new, it appears of its own accord. It can neither be produced on order nor prohibited on order. What&#8217;s new in poetry results from the coming together of what&#8217;s new in the individual&#8217;s spirit and the spiritual life of the <span class=\"GramE\">time.<\/span>       <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Vietnamese poets living abroad can act as a bridge between Vietnamese poetry and world poetry. It&#8217;s a contribution befitting the circumstance of the time. But whether contemporary Vietnamese poetry can create a new departure is something that will be determined by poets living in the homeland. I can sense that this departure has already begun.
