\nhangs from the other<\/p>\n

At the library he beats
\nmen in chess.
\nThey are Black Latino Chinese
\nold, some of them young,
\nsome bearded, and most are ugly
\nmurmuring, they eye
\nthe daughter\u2019s thick calves
\nwhen she tiptoes and whispers
\ninto the father\u2019s ear
\nis it time to go home yet?
\nand then they hit
\ntheir chessboards
\nwith a loud<\/p>\n

At the library
\nI read to master the words of a language
\nhe can barely speak. Because
\nhe is the one who teaches me
\nhow to read and spell first, swirling
\nletters in the air with one finger<\/p>\n

C L O U D A N C H O R H O U S E<\/p>\n

At the library,
\nI read all the dirty parts
\nin adult fiction
\nI scrawl the words fuck you
\nto those motherfuckers
\nwho write on the bathroom walls

I take the time to write

\nmax-factored beauty

\nMarilyn Monroe),
\nreplacing the photos
\nthat pinned us in the local newspaper
\nwhere we\u2019re surrounded
\nby white sponsors, a whole congregation,
\nwe are furtive, expectant,
\nthe lines among us
\nindistinct.<\/p>\n

At the library
\nI make my way
\nto the right angles of corners
\nand ride the sweep and bend
\nof English, using the words to
\nstitch for myself a
\ngrammar that makes sense
\nof the wilderness
\nof the war<\/p>\n

and eventually,
\nI become what I know \u2013 a writer
\nwho will tell dirty stories
\nabout being a refugee,
\nabout being a refugee girl,
\nabout growing up poor in San Jos\u00e9,
\nabout counting those
\nwho have come into my life
\n(because of the war) and
\ncounting those who have left
\n(because of the war).<\/p>\n

And when I stop
\ngoing to the library,
\nwhen I am no longer his girl,
\nand the prick of his hopes
\npinned on me
\nno longer bleeds,
\nhe will say to me,<\/p>\n

“Your poems hurt me. I don’t understand
\nwhat they mean. But I can tell you,
\nthey are lies, and those lies
\nyou’ve spread\u2014they will shame me
